Little Mai Press, founded in 1998, is an independent publisher of new, quality children's titles. We currently specialize in illustrated books, and we plan to expand into juvenile novels in 2005. Our first title, Freddie Q, Freckle, was released in January, 1999, and our second title, I've Got Mail!, was released in November, 2001. Our third title, Why Me? Why Did I Have To Get Diabetes?, was released in October, 2004. Little Mai Press is a member of the Small Publishers Association of North America (SPAN).
Our Missionby Little Mai founders Robert and Jacqueline Messinger In mid-1997, we began to notice a distinct pattern to the story and illustration preferences of our daughter Laura Mai, then just two-and-a-half years old. While Laura Mai was happy to be read to anytime, she was displaying noticeably more enthusiasm for books that were written from a child's perspective rather than an adult's. She was more than mildly amused when children or small animals were able to get away with antics she could only dream of...especially when adult authority figures might be won over to their way of thinking in the end. She did not mind when social values were injected into a story...as long as these values were put forth by children rather than adults and were not overly preachy. Her best review of a book was, "I liked it. There was nothing mean in there." And contrary to certain juvenile publishing guidelines, most of the books she favored were written in rhyme! Wondering whether Laura Mai's preferences were comparable to those of her contemporaries, we asked other parents to record and compare their children's reactions to a list of titles. We discovered most of the children's reactions and preferences to be comparable to Laura Mai's. Based on what we learned from these experiences, we know exactly what types of books will be published by Little Mai Press. •Above all, Little Mai books will be appropriate FUN. •Little Mai books will never contain material to scare little minds. •We will strive to create and search for stories written from a children's point of view. •While Little Mai books may have their share of antagonists, none will be presented in an overly mean or evil manner. •Appropriate social values may be introduced in Little Mai books, but never in a manner that is intimidating, frightening or preachy. •Little Mai books will be dedicated to promoting self-esteem. •Little Mai books will strive to demonstrate to children that they are not alone in their fears, and that they are basically safe in their beds and their homes, in the loving care of their parents or guardians. We understand that publishing for little minds is a tremendous responsibility. It's a charge we take with great enthusiasm.
